Harpies were a bat-like creature that served Jadis (Walden) during the Long Winter. They were seen gathering with other followers (ogres, goblins, ghouls, minotaurs, minoboars, vultures, ravens, wolves, ankle slicers, boggles, werewolves, polar bears, white tigers, cyclopes, black dwarves, and hags) around the Stone Table where they watched and laughed at the mighty lion, Aslan, sacrifice himself to the witch.around the Stone Table (Walden) where they watched and laughed at Aslan (Walden) sacrificing himself to the witch. One harpy stood in front of the lion, but flew off since it got scared.
During the First Battle of Beruna (Walden) - when the gryphons and eagles from Aslan's Army (Walden) were sent forth along to attack Jadis' Army (Walden), by dropping rocks on them - many harpies, along with ravens and vultures, were sent to try and stop them, though many were taken down in the process. One of them grabbed a gryphon and turned it upside down, which caused both of them to fall down to the ground and die.
Trivia[]
- Harpies were only featured in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (film); they were never mentioned in the books or seen in the other films.
- In an earlier version of the script for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (film), harpies played a much bigger role, with an added scene where Jadis (Walden) awakened them from their dwelling; a dark, twisted and corrupted tree.
- Harpies come from Greek mythology. They are best known for constantly stealing all food from the prophet Phineus. The literal meaning of the word seems to be "that which snatches", as it comes from the Greek word harpazein (ἁρπάζειν), which means "to snatch". Harpies in those versions are more bird-like compared to the bay-like ones in the movie.
