Ahoshta Tarkaan was a Calormene Tarkaan and Grand Vizier. Ahoshta managed to climb the rigid social hierarchy of Calormen through (according to Aravis Tarkheena) flattery and evil advice.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Throughout the Chronicles[]
Although Ahoshta was of common birth, he rose to the station of Tarkaan and, being very close to the Tisroc, was appointed Grand Vizier after the death of Axartha Tarkaan, the previous advisor. He met with the Tisroc in a meeting, where he was portrayed as grovelling and sycophantic, bowing before the Tisroc and accepting kicks in the bum by Prince Rabadash.[citation needed]
Ahoshta was engaged to Aravis Tarkheena in an arranged marriage, an event which she claimed was part of a plot by her wicked stepmother to get rid of her husband's child. Aravis, however, hated Ahoshta for several reasons: his low birth weight, his ape-like face, and his plotting and trickery. In addition, he was about sixty, while she was much younger (she is believed to be twelve or thirteen years old).[citation needed]
As a result, she fled from Calormen to Narnia, along with Hwin, her mare who was a talking horse. After she and her friend Lasaraleen Tarkheena saw him before the Tisroc, the latter tried to point out the importance of her fiancé to Aravis. Still, Aravis only found him even less appealing, criticizing him for grovelling like a slave and seeking revenge by encouraging the Tisroc to plot his son's death.[citation needed]
